Hi Friends. Remember the US$300 from Lutie's church foundation? Well, my daughter and her husband were telling me how the high school attended by my granddaughter ensures that all kids are ready for school. Breakfast is provided for food-needy kids to start their day right.

Our Los Banos teachers note that hungry kids are generally unattentive, dozes off in class, or fail to come to class. Although, indigent kids are now provided lunch in schools. The learning opportunities in the morning are not maximized by food-needy students. Thus, the money from Oro Foundation was donated to the Lalakay Elementary School food fund for a pilot project Breakfast for Kids.

The school will prepare a list of food-needy students. Breakfast will be rice/rice porridge with egg on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and pan de sal/bread with egg or peanut butter on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The school will give us the summary for a two-week run so we can extrapolate how many weeks would be covered by the P14,000 (peso equivalent of US$300).
Photo: Breakfast for Kids (BK) project at Lalakay Elementary School starts with a cash donation from Oro Foundation, USA-Friends of Los Banos Children (FLBC) and prayer. FLBC Rhodora Maligalig with teachers Ilma Fucio, Raisa Casipit, and Arlene Aquino (holding cash donation). The BK project aims to provide breakfast to food-needy school children, preparing them for the school day!

It is a good day, indeed!

Dear FLBC,

Warm greetings!

I am sending along with these pictures my heartfelt gratitute for the good things you are doing for the education of the children of Los Baños. I have been a witness of your well treasured deeds from the time I was at Lopez Elementary School up to the moment I was assigned as school head at Bagong Silang Elementary School. With your donations and encouragement, you have proven that distance and terrain are not hindrance to reach out and address the children's needs.

Now, as I move to my new assignment at Tadlac Elementary School I bring with me the advice and words of wisdom that Ma'am Alfin gave me during my first day at Bagong Silang. Those words have given me courage and inspiration to strive hard for Bagong Silang Elementary School and is still now, as I face far greater challenges in my new school. Thank you very much to all of you who are supporting us in the DepEd. People like you are our inspiration and motivation to pursue in taking the lead and make a difference.

Maraming salamat po,

The FLBC is an informal organization of committed people dedicated to improving literacy among children in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.

In May 2002, we thought of establishing a library for Los Banos children, naming it “Aklatang Bayan ng Los Baños.” With the realization that we were not yet financially capable of creating and maintaining one, we opted to negotiate with Pastor Pepito Bato of the Evangelical Baptist Church (EBC) to open the children’s library at their school, Josiah’s Place. We also agreed to donate books and supplies on a need basis to the other schools in Los Baños.

The core group is comprised of Los Baños natives and has mobilized friends and fellow Filipino expatriates to collect books and other materials, to raise funds, and send them to the local partner, the Grand Harvest Christian Ministries, Inc. Books and other materials were donated to pre-screened "libraries" existing in schools and in the community. The organization continues to need volunteers to reach out to more children.

With the FLBC and friends' commitment for this project, we can reach out to the children in Los Banos and hope that through these books, their lives will be changed! Imagine children learning of many new things! Imagine them dreaming of wanting to go beyond elementary school!

Why books?

Here are some facts to fully understand the needs of these children:

Los Baños has a population of 82, 027 and is located 63 km south of Manila, Luzon. It is famous for its hot springs, and is home to two world renowned institutions - the University of the Philippines (UP) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). It has 14 barangays: Batong Malake, Tuntungin-Putho, Anos, Bagong Silang, Bayog, Maahas, San Antonio, Lalakay, Mayondon, Bambang, Timugan, Tadlac, Malinta and Baybayin. Batong Malake is the largest area (31.32% of Los Baños, including UP) and Baybayin is the smallest (0.49%).

Outside the university and research campuses, there are 12 public elementary schools with their corresponding student populations (1995 census): Batong Malake (2,060), Tuntungin-Putho (508), Calara in Carbern, Anos (451), Bayog (810), Maahas (487), San Antonio (282), Lalakay (460), Mayondon (1,554), Bambang (449), Timugan (1,372), Tadlac (200), and Malinta. Baybayin children go to Timugan Elementary School. These alone account for 8, 633 school children. With a population increase of 5% per year, student population this year could amount to 12,799.

There are also profit and non-profit private elementary schools in Los Baños, with Maquiling School as the oldest private school owned and run by parents. Population statistics show that children 9 and below comprise a sizable 15% of the whole population of Los Baños.

It is ironic that with this great number of school children population, there is not one public library for children or adults in any of the 14 barangays of Los Baños! Moreover, all public elementary schools either do not have a library or are sorely lacking in books.

I am Mrs. Myrna S. Redullo, the mother of three children who received school supplies. I would like to thank you for your help, whoever you are. You were used by the Lord.

Every year, I dream that there will be somebody to help my children in their schooling - even just one of them. It is extremely difficult for me to send them to school. I am not sure if I should be happy or not that my children are now in school, because I have 15 children. This is the first time I have received help for their schooling – just like my dream. So I am very thankful to you and to Mrs. C. Ilagan, the school principal.

I hope that you will help other children also with their school supplies. I know that you are helping other children like my children who are poor. For your help, I will frequently pray for all of you.

The past year was an exciting year for the FLBC "Libraries for the Children of Los Banos". The FLBC is pleased to announce that we surpassed the number of boxes sent last year! We were able to send an impressive 30 boxes coming from generous donors in the USA and Canada. All were accounted for by our local counterpart, the Grand Harvest Christian Ministries. Plus, money sent earlier was used to buy new books and dictionaries in the Philippines.

US coordinators, Dr. Arelyne Pacho-Ramos, Rhodora Maligalig, Ching Redmon, and Ching Gomez all visited Los Banos separately in the past year to check on the book project. In the Hasik Elementary School, our donated books were individually wrapped in plastic in book shelves and actively used. The School itself has expanded not only in structure but also in size so that many more school children are using it. They are thankful for the shelves donated to them.

In Lopez Elementary school, the books were brought to the classrooms instead since the library was being used to house extra chairs and tables that were not used. The plan apparently was for the library to be converted into another classroom soon. Through the generosity of our funding partner, Los Banos Laguna Association of Southern California (LBLASC) based in Glendale, California as well as core members’ contributions, Alfin was able to purchase dictionaries for all the teachers of the 12 barangay schools from Grade 1-6 this year.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9128979503943393256.post-3883367747053922202006-12-31T12:13:00.000-08:002010-07-24T12:17:01.790-07:0018 schools receive books in 2006School recipients for 2006

The past year was an exciting year for the FLBC "Libraries for the Children of Los Banos". We had many donations of books for children, teens and adults, National Geographic magazines, Good Housekeeping and similar magazines, educational tapes and even school supplies. New and gently used books were sent to Los Banos to meet needs of children much to the amazement of the core group and to the people who had helped unpack and stamp the books.

The FLBC is pleased to announce that we surpassed the number of boxes sent last year! We were able to send an impressive 18 1/3 boxes coming from generous donors in the USA and Canada. All were accounted for by our local counterpart, the Grand Harvest Christian Ministries. Plus, money sent earlier was used to buy new books in the Philippines. All in all, Year 2 implementation was a demonstration of the commitment of the natives and friends of Los Banos - that we can make a difference in the life of a child in Los Banos.

Where did the all the books go? The FLBC received applications for donations from 6 public schools
including:

Lopez Elementary School (Bo. Batong Malaki)

San Antonio Elementary School (Bo. San Antonio)

Bagong Silang Elementary School (Bo. Bagong Silang)

Paciano Rizal Elementary School (Bo. Putho-Tuntungin)

Calara Elementary School (Carbern Village, Bo. Anos), and

National High School (Bo. Batong Malaki).

Two private DECS-registered schools/learning centers, the Kiddie Care Learning Center (Bo Putho-Tuntungin) and the Hasik Elementary School (Bo. Bayog) also applied.

In addition, our first library-recipient, the Josiah's Place of the Evangelical Baptist Church (EBC, Bo. Batong Malaki) received additional books for their community extension through Christ the Good Shepherd Youth Centers along the "riles" (Bo. Anos), and Marymount Subdivision. So far, all these applicants have received books.

We still have the college-level books which will eventually be donated to the Bo. Baybayin Baranggay Library. Wow!!! All our efforts have made a difference to the children in Los Banos!

To date, we have reached 6 out of the 13 Los Banos barangays. But we still have 7 barangays to go! We will be hearing from the schools in these baranggays soon. We may have to bring more books to some of the school recipients in Year 2. Imagine one or two boxes of books to a school. That is not much for the number of kids in one school! The FLBC has also seen the need for shelves. We are soliciting for funds for shelves, or for a donation of shelves through families in Los Banos. Ching Redmon, and Jane Abalos of the Maquiling Depot donated 2 ready made shelves last year and will again donate this year.

With the FLBC and friends commitment for this project, we can reach out to the children in Los Banos and hope that through these books, their lives will be changed! Imagine children learning of many new things! Imagine them dreaming of wanting to go beyond elementary school!

We started a directory of Friends of Los Banos Children under Celia Correa.

We initially started with 5 core persons representing East and West Coast Canada, and East , West Coast and Southeast USA. Later we expanded to the Virgin Islands and Midwest, and received enthusiastic support from the Los Banos Alumni Association in America whose headquarters is located in California.

Twelve (12) balikbayan boxes of books have been sent and an additional three boxes are now enroute to the Philippines. We also have a subscription of National Geographic donated by Nely Deomano-Davies from the United Kingdom.

Sheilachu Paje-Gomez developed a document for applying schools. This is required before we donate books since it will elicit the school personnel and families’ participation in the success of their library. At present, we are soliciting applications for library assistance for books. Financial assistance will be planned in the future.

In the Philippines, events have been unfolding.

We needed to have an organized group assist in this project so that distribution of books would not be a haphazard event. Alfin Bustrillos-Zamora was put in charge and she recruited her church, Grand Harvest Church to help oversee the project of book distribution to the library as well as all schools in Los Banos. An account has now been opened with Alfin and Madz Quiamco as co-signatories. This will allow them to receive donations locally and abroad.. They have received $500 forinitial costs from FLBC.

They have received 4 sets of encyclopedia, National Geographic Magazines, reference books, literature and fantasy books. Most of these books have been turned over to Josiah’s Place Children’s Library in Umali Subdivision. The National Geographic subscription has also been turned over to Josiah’s Place.

The Evangelical Baptist Church also opened an extension of this library where more children are located, near the railroad tracks in Barrio Anos.

The Hasik Elementary School in Bayog was the first one to fill up an application form soliciting books. The set of Encyclopaedia Junior Britannica was the initial donation of the FLBC to them.

Application forms for book solicitation have been sent out to various schools of Los Banos. Alfin recently received completed forms from Kiddie Care Learning Center as well as the Lopez Elementary School.

A stamp pad has been bought for the project so that all donated books will have a stamp indicating its donation from Friends of Los Banos Children.

Jane Abalos, owner of Maquiling Lumber donated book shelves for the library. Her sister, Conchito de Castro-Redmon has been instrumental in this development.

Future plans are to start a website if the group deems it a practical way to disseminate the information

May all of us who have been blessed continue to bless the children of Los Banos. SUGOD!!
